LUCY MacGILLIS - Umbria

11 I live in awe of the beauty in the textures, in the smells, the light, the flavours and colors here in Italy. The paintings are the result of these moments when I stand alone in the studio or in a field and allow myself to be transported by the paint and the linen before me.The hot sun on my hat, the cicadas, the ride through the countryside in my little old car all become part of the painting. Ideally I forget all that surrounds me and slip into a sort of trance of looking, mixing, placing paint on the linen, looking, scraping it away, looking, mixing, trying again and again. To make more luminous paintings, I create opaque surfaces in the historical Italian method using mixtures of rabbit skin glue and lime to ground the linen. I mix my own oil paint with raw earth pigments and linseed oil.The objects I chose to paint in the still life are things which enchant Lucy MacGillis - „Umbria“ me in some way - the warm figs thatVito has just picked, friendly old bottles I painted years ago which have stood guard in my studio all along, or simple paper bags from sicilian markets. While the historical Italian frescoes of Piero della Francesca, Giotto and Masaccio guide and humble me constantly, I am looking to simplify what I see into simple planes of interacting colors to create light. My life is one of joy here, the paintings hopefully reflect that.
